The Faculty of Law has emerged as the winner of the 11th edition of the Lanre Bello Inter-faculty Debate Competition which was held on Friday, 3 September 2021 at the First Bank Building, Faculty of Agriculture.
The debate, themed “Youth in Politics”, witnessed a large turnout of University of Ibadan students, and particularly, members of the Junior Chambers International, the organization which hosted the competition.
The contestants, representing the seventeen faculties of the university, debated on predetermined topics in pairs, and at the end, the Faculty of Law emerged as the first, while the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and the Faculty of Education emerged as the second and third positions respectively. The first speaker of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences also emerged as the Best Speaker at the competition.
While giving his chairman address, Honourable Saheed Akinade Fijabi enunciated the importance of the active participation of the youth in revolutionising governance in Nigeria. He also emphasised on the importance of leading definite changes through diverse spheres of influence: leadership, business, academia, and others. While presenting the award of excellence to the chairman, the President of the Junior Chambers International, University of Ibadan Chapter, Miss Faridah Animashaun, appreciated the presence of the chairman and further said that intellectual discourses like the Lanre Bello Inter-Faculty Debate are very important for the growth of a country like Nigeria.
At the end of the presentations by the speakers, the judges, represented by Ernest Dibia, announced the results, and alongside the chairman, presented the plaques to the respective faculties that emerged as the best.
Notable among other presentations were giveaways by the sponsors of the event, spoken word poetry, a musical presentation by the Law Choral group, the cutting of the cake, and many others.
