The University of Ibadan Students’ Union, on Tuesday, 4th June 2024 has condemned what it termed ‘the recent move by the federal government to jettison all remaining elements of welfarism left in the country, including but not limited to subsidization of education in public tertiary institutions’.

The Union through its release titled ‘Our Stand on the NLC Strike’, signed jointly by the Students’ Union President and the General Secretary, Aweda Bolaji and Ogundijo Dolapo respectively, emphasized that it was the ‘prerogative choice of the masses’ to unionize in the face of their common welfare.

“Collective bargaining and implicitly mass action, such as the just concluded NLC strike action, remain effective bargaining tools, which continue to exist as an inalienable right that must not be repressed” the release reads.

Stating its aligning stance with workers in the country, the University of Ibadan called on the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the headship of President Bola Tinubu to stand honestly by the agreements that have been reached as a result of the strike action and to significantly improve the welfare of the working class in the country.

“We urge the federal government to stand honestly by the agreements that have been reached as a result of the strike action and to significantly improve the welfare of the working-class citizens far beyond the measly acts of tokenism that they are currently offering” the release added.
