Some members of the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan have reiterated their stance that a congress of the Students’ Union will hold as scheduled by the Students’ Representative Council at its last ordinary sitting.

Drawing from Article XIII, Section 2 of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, we use this medium to reiterate that resolution 2 of agenda 4 of the resolutions of the First Ordinary Seating of the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council, held on 22nd June 2024, which called for a Congress of Students, still holds” the release reads.

In a statement signed by three of the members of the SRC, Hon. Babatimehin Peace (Àṣíwájú), Hon. Obirija Somtochukwu, and Hon. Nice Linus, the dissenting members maintained that the slated general meeting of the Students’Union will hold as it was resolved.

“We reiterate that according to Article VII, Section 2 of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution, the Student Union Executive Committee do not have the powers to postpone a Congress of Students called by the Resolution of the Students’ Representative Council” the honorables said.

Condemning the postponement announced by the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Executive Council headed by Aweda Bolaji, the group of the honorable members faulted the Executive Council for unilaterally postponing the Congress in an uncertain time and for unexplained, unforseen circumstances.

“It is against this backdrop that we reject and even condemn the statement released yesterday by the Student Union Executive Committee, signed by the President and his General Secretary. Also, we consider it an insult that the Student Union Executive Committee will postpone the Congress of Students for the reason stated as ‘unforeseen circumstances’, which was the reason stated in the statement released yesterday” the statement reads.

The group however called on students to attend the congress with an assurance that the general meeting of the Students’ Union will hold.

However, and more importantly, we seek to use this opportunity to reiterate to the students of the University of Ibadan that the Congress of Students scheduled for Saturday, 29th June 2024, will hold at 10 a.m tomorrow. We therefore call on the generality of Uites to come enmasse to air their opinions at the Congress”.
