For flouting ‘Article XIII, Section 3′ of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, the Students’ Representative Council has resolved on two punitive measures against the incumbent University of Ibadan Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji.
Article XIII (3) of the Students’ Union says “Congress shall also be summoned by a resolution of Council”.
Recall that the Students’ Union President and the Students’ Union General Secretary had unilaterally through a release postponed an earlier scheduled Congress, slated for Saturday, 29th June 2024.
The disciplinary case which had been forwarded to the SRC Disciplinary Committee was headed by its Chairman, Honorable Iyanuoluwa Egboche, representing the Great Independence Hall constituency.
The Council resolved that the Union President should ‘write an apology letter to the general student populace and the Students’ Representative Council for disregarding the rulings of the Council and by extension, the general student populace.’
The Student Union President would also ‘observe 48 hours of community service at the University Health Centre (Jaja Clinic).
A two-page report by the Disciplinary Committee obtained by IndyPress, signed by Honorable Bamigboye Isaac and Honorable Egboche, Secretary and Chairman respectively, noted that the “President breached the constitution as evidenced by a letter sent to the Disciplinary Committee through the Speaker from the Resolution Implementation Committee”.
“A postponement letter from the President, through the office of the General Secretary, dated June 27th and 28th, 2024, outline the reasons for the postponement. To consolidate these reasons, a letter of apology was sent to the house, acknowledging the gravity of the offence while reiterating that the postponement was due to personal reasons, which are not tenable according to the constitution” the Disciplinary report reads.
“The President was found guilty of breaching the constitution. However, he has sent a letter of apology to the council leadership, explaining the reasons for the postponement and admitting that his actions were wrong,” the report further reads.
Notably, the disciplinary report as obtained by IndyPress, also indicted the Speaker of the Students’ Representative Council, Rt. Honorable Busoye Matthias “for not properly informing and consulting honorable members”, thereby obstructing the implementation of a Congress resolution, as it was formulated at the first ordinary sitting of the current 11th Assembly.
In its final resolve, punitive measures made on Saturday by the UI’SRC, under the headship of Rt. Honorable Busoye Opeyemi Matthias, were meted, only, upon the Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji.
