“Prioritize Ethical Principles of Journalism, Academic Excellence” – UCJ UI Tells Campus Journalists

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan on Saturday, 27th of July, 2024, held a training session for press members in the Great Independence Hall of Residence, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of Residence, Sultan Bello Hall of Residence and Queen Idia Hall of Residence.

The training session which held at Indy JCR addressed news writing, feature writing and investigative reportage.

Speaking on news writing, UCJ Editor-in-Chief, Tijani Abdukabir charged participants to prioritize accuracy, timeliness and factuality while writing a news story.

“Always ensure any news story you turn out is factual, accurate, timely and newsworthy,” Mr. Tijani said.

Also, the trainer for features writing story, Ajise Israel, who is the immediate past Editor-in-Chief of the Ransome Kuti Hall press organization, explained that feature writing is a continuation of news story, while charging participants to hunt for feature story that is human interest driven.

Addressing investigative writing, the Politics Editor of UCJ, Emmanuel Utibe emphasized the importance of prioritizing accuracy in investigative writing.

He charged trainees to avoid any form of mistruth in their investigative reportage.

The President of the Union, Tarre Elizabeth urged participants to strive for academic excellence, while giving commitment to their campus journalistic endeavors.

Miss Tarre further charged participants to support their Editors-in-Chief by turning in assigned articles within the time schedule.

“You are a student before you became a campus journalist. So always strive for academic excellence even as a campus journalist,” she said.
