Professor Adeniyi Abidemi Adenipekun, a specialist in Radiation Oncology, on Thursday, 17th of October, 2024, presented the 546th inaugural lecture, highlighting improvements in cancer treatment in Nigeria.

In his lecture, titled “Dealing with Rebellion in the Commonwealth of Cells with Guided Missiles: That the Obedient May Live”, he discussed advancements like regenerative medicine, stem cell research, and precision medicine for targeting cancer more effectively.

He emphasized the importance of new technologies such as radio-frequency and microwave ablation, HighIntensity Focused Ultrasound, and molecular tests for identifying cancer-causing genetic mutations.

Professor Adenipekun noted, however, that while treatments are becoming more targeted, many therapies remain expensive, placing a burden on patients.

While commending the government’s efforts, particularly the Cancer Health Fund and Cancer Access Programme, he called for further improvements in cancer care infrastructure, including better diagnostic tools in teaching hospitals, the installation of therapy machines, and funding for cancer research.

He also advocated for cancer treatment to be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to ease the economic pressure on patients.

In addition, Professor Adenipekun called for preventive measures such as regular checkups, healthy lifestyle choices, and state-level investment in cancer treatment facilities.

His lecture was part of the 2023/2024 inaugural lecture series at the University of Ibadan.
