In response to the ongoing two weeks-long electricity blackout at the University of Ibadan College Hospital (UCH), student-residents at the Alexander Brown Hall (ABH), have agreed to boycott University activities indefinitely, until electricity supply is restored to UCH and the student halls of residence.
The resolve was decided at a town hall gathering of medical students in the hall, which started by 7:28 PM, Monday evening at the Volleyball court, ABH, UI.
Recall that IndyPress reported that students residing in Alexander Brown Hall, alongside its neighbour, Falase Hall of Residence, have had to deal with the unbecoming difficulties resulting from the unavailability of electricity supply in the college.Thus far, the situation has denied them comfortable access to perform domestic and academic functions.
Students, at the Town Hall convened by the Hall leadership, expressed displeasure at the protracted unavailability of electricity supply, which has lingered on without recourse to its general importance.
The students, also decried the silence of concerned authorities, such as the College of Medicine management and the University of Ibadan authority, who despite awareness resulting from the difficulties impacted by the situation, are yet to make an official response to the situation.
Culling from a meeting which student leaders, representing the student community had with the College of Medicine on Monday, chaired by the Deputy Provost, Professor Samuel Babafemi Olaleye, a student leader, who pleaded anonymity noted that the proposition for “a one-hour supply of generator-powered electricity in the morning and another in the evening” as proposed by the administrative heads were rejected.
The students have also called on the leadership of the Students’ Union, as well as the Students’ Representative Council, to intervene proactively in the crisis.
They alongside resolved for a boycott of ICOMAA event tomorrow, tasking the Executives to communicate the wishes of all Brownites at the event.
Equally, the students resolved for a Friday deadline to the College Management for an appropriate feedback.
