The University of Ibadan has emphasized the crucial role porters play in hall administration, stressing their significant contribution to the institution’s reputation and student satisfaction.

At the 2024 training program for porters, themed “Managing Students for Resilience in the University,” Mrs. Stella Soola, Senior Deputy Registrar, Senate, Admissions & Affiliated Institutions (SAAI), highlighted the importance of porters in embodying the university’s values and providing exceptional service.

“Porters are responsible for assisting students with accommodation needs, providing security, communication, and maintenance services, and creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors.”

The training addressed the challenges porters face, including managing large student populations, handling conflicts, and balancing multiple responsibilities with limited resources.

Trainers, comprising the University management, at the program recommended regular training, increased support and resources, and recognition and rewards for exceptional service.

Other key topics, taught by different senior members of the University management, included harnessing data for effective service delivery, developing positive attitudes in dealing with workplace violence and harassment, understanding diverse student needs, and conflict management and resolution.
