SUEC Unbans Electoral Activities, Calls for Active Participation

The Publicity Committee following its inauguration on Thursday, 9th January 2025, declared the ban on the University of Ibadan Students’ Union electoral activities lifted.

A 4-page document stamped by the Electoral Commission stated the requirements and guidelines for the election.

“Interested candidates can obtain forms for Executive and SRC positions at Room 22, Students Affairs Division, University of Ibadan. ” the release noted.

The available Executive positions, the Commission noted, are President, Vice-President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, House Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Sport Secretary.

Also, the available Legislative positions are: Students’ Representative Council for each hall of residence.

“We are pleased to inform the entire University community that the ban on electoral activities is officially lifted, effective 10:00PM, Saturday, January 18, 2025. This is to allow our union to move forward with its electoral processes and ensure a fair and transparent election.”

“As a result, all electoral activities, including sales of form and campaigning, can now resume. We encourage all members to participate actively in the electoral process and exercise their right to vote and be voted for.”

Spelling the Requirements 

Aspirants, according to the commission, must have a clean record, with no history of conviction, rustication, expulsion, ejection from a Hall of Residence, or substance abuse.

“Nominees for positions of Student Leadership at the university level should not be in 100 level or final year,” SUEC release read.

“The presidential aspirants must be at least in 400 level or the penultimate year, as applicable, during the 2023/2024 academic session. Aspirants must also be on a CGPA Score of 3.0 (i.e., 2:1 Division) and above for the Executive positions and this also applies to the House Leadership invariably while aspirants for the Student Representative Council must be on a CGPA Score of 2.0 (i.e., 2:2 Division) and above as at the time of nomination. Those in programmes not operating the CGPA will have their scores prorated to CGPA for the purpose of the election.”

“Aspirants must be of unscathed record, not having been convicted by the police, rusticated or expelled from any Institution, ejected from Hall of Residence or indulging in substance abuse. They must be persons proven to abide by the rule of law. Any Union officer wishing to contest at any Union election shall have resigned any previous political appointments, and such resignations shall have been made public before the close of nominations,” the release noted.

“Aspirants must score at least 50% during the screening. Aspirants should be of sound mind.”

On Campaign Guidelines 

The campaign guidelines for the upcoming election are as follows: the campaign period begins at 10 pm on Saturday, January 18, 2025, and ends at 11:59 pm on Friday, February 21, 2025. All campaigns must be conducted peacefully, with no tolerance for violence or aggressive behavior. Aspirants are not allowed to deface walls with campaign posters or banners and must comply with the school’s regulations guiding publicity on campus.

Completed application forms, accompanied by required documents, must be submitted to Room 22, Student Affairs Building by 2:00 pm on January 31, 2025, for SEC and February 24, 2025, for SRC.
