Seven days have passed since the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) issued an open letter to the Federal Government of Nigeria, addressing the prolonged electricity outage at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.
The open letter to the Federal Government was signed by the Union President, Aweda Bolaji and the General Secretary, Ogundejo Japheth.
The UISU’s letter of January 13, 2025, which threatened protest action, has been met with complete silence, IndyPress observes.
Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the power outage crisis at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, has lasted for eighty days; and counting.
The Open Letter’s Stern Warning
The open letter from the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has set a 7-day ultimatum for Federal Government’s intervention in the prolonged and “deplorable” electricity blackout at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Team Amelioration, the current Students’ Union leadership, had explicitly vowed to stage a protest if their demands were ignored.
“As such, we give the Federal Government a 7-day ultimatum to address these pressing issue. Failure to act within this stipulated time will leave us with no option but to mobilize and protest against this continuous neglect by the government,” the open letter reads.
Muted Reactions
Despite growing concerns and its far-reaching effects on students, the University of Ibadan management, under the leadership of Professor Kayode Adebowale, has maintained a puzzling silence.
There has been no official communication from the management to the student community, leaving many questions unanswered.
The Students’ Union has also been inactive, failing to mobilize students through a Congress or other means to garner support for its planned protest.
Moreover, hours after the deadline, both the Executive Council and the Students’ Representative Council remain eerily silent, sparking concerns about their commitment to action.
