Students of the University of Ibadan commenced a demonstration on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, against the prolonged electricity blackout in Alexander Brown and Falase Halls of Residence.
As observed by IndyPress, the students were seen holding various placards with inscriptions such as “FG, what have we done?’, ‘We cannot continue to suffer in darkness’, ‘50% or nothing good’, and ‘Give us light’, among others.
The students expressed concerns about the implications of the blackout on their academics and mental health, while calling on concerned authorities’ intervention.
At the time of filing this report, the students were gathered at the UCH main gate.
Addressing the protesters, Aweda Bolaji, the Students’ Union President, encouraged the demonstrators to continue the peaceful protest. He assured them that other students from the university campus were on their way to show solidarity.
“We are waiting for our brothers and sisters from the University of Ibadan,” Aweda Bolaji said.
“They are mobilizing currently, and our people will join us soon. Very soon, we will march to the State Secretariat.”
