The Lawliwood Society of the University of Ibadan will be holding its annual stage production, Virtuoso, on February 28th 2025 at the Wole Soyinka Theatre, University of Ibadan.
The stage production which is the 6th edition of its kind will see the performance of two stage plays in one night; a tragedy and a comedy.
The tragedy, Aluta, will be an emulation of the events of July 10 1999 when 5 OAU students was killed.
Written by Ayeye Toluwalope, the stage play is timely with a focus on cultism, student unionism and fee hike struggle.
With the current fee hike struggle in the university of Ibadan and around Nigeria, the play hopes to narrate the nature of students struggle in relation to various matter.
“‘Aluta’ is based on the tragic events of July 10, 1999 at Obafemi Awolowo University. Like I tell my people at rehearsals, this is a play of the moment. Toluwalope wrote this play not only as historical documentation but also as a mirror to contemporary struggles in Nigerian higher institutions and and how youth movements shape societal change,” the Director, Toluwaleke Owonifaari told IndyPress.
The second play, Ponzi, is both comedic and didactic in nature as it hopes to pass lessons of shunning fraud.
The writer Oreoluwa Olorode, drew inspiration from what he had experienced personally to write the play.
It is directed by Onamade Ṣeunbabara and will be staged on the same day as the tragedy.
Tickets for the stage production are already being sold at #3,000 for regular price, #5,000 for couples ticket and #10,000 for VIP.
