A congress held on Sunday, January 26, 2025, elected three members of the Great Independence Hall of Residence to the Katanga Republic Independent Electoral Commission (KRIEC) for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The congress took place at the hall’s quadrangle, chaired by the Administrator General, Olaniyan Ibrahim.

Article XII, Section 1, of the Great Independence Hall of Residence constitution states that the KRIEC will conduct elections as needed.

The commission, according to the constitution, consists of eight members: four from the Hall Assembly, three from the congress, and one from the press, as members must remain impartial.

The three nominated residents to serve on the electoral commission are Omachonu Kelvin, Odunukan Olwagbemiga Collins, and Ayoleke Oreoluwa Joseph.

The Administrator General, Olaniyan Ibrahim, urged hall members to cooperate with the KRIEC to ensure a free and fair election.

“The main reason KRIEC formation wasn’t done earlier is that it was scheduled for this week,” Olaniyan Ibrahim told IndyPress.

“They will be ratified by the Independence Hall assembly alongside other members. The KRIEC will be an independent body, and I advise all Katangites to cooperate with them.”

Speaker of the Hall Assembly, Rt. Honorable Egboche Ehikowoicho Iyanuoluwa expressed confidence in the integrity of the congress members who constituted the electoral commission.

“We have two former returning officers with experience, which will ensure the KRIEC’s stability. With their experience, I’m certain they can work well,” the Speaker added.
