The management of the University of Ibadan (UI) has refuted claims of an ‘armed robbery’ incident at Awolowo Hall of Residence, clarifying that the event was a lone theft and not an attack by armed robbers.
In a statement released by the university’s registrar, Ganiyu O. Saliu, UI management expressed dismay over misleading reports suggesting that an armed robbery took place.
The statement explained that a lone thief gained access to two rooms in the hall — both of which had been inadvertently left open by students — and stole mobile phones.
According to the university, the thief fled as soon as an alarm was raised, prompting swift intervention by campus safety officers.
“The police were alerted, and efforts were made to track the thief.”
The university further emphasized that “no students were harmed or traumatized” during the incident and assured the public of the continued safety of lives and property on campus.
“The Management of the University of Ibadan has read with dismay the news about a lone stealing attack in one of the Halls of Residence of the University.”
“Management states that it was a lone thief who entered two of the rooms in the hall and stole the mobile phones of the students. The rooms were inadvertently opened by the students themselves.”
“The thief fled immediately when an alarm was raised, and the safety officers swung into action.”
