The University of Ibadan has reiterated its commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry through strategic collaborations that foster education and innovation.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter Olapegba, highlighted the university’s dedication to strengthening town-gown relationships, while receiving a delegation from MicCom Cables and Wires Ltd, during a courtesy visit.
Professor Olapegba expressed appreciation to the Chief Executive Officer of MicCom Cables and Wires Ltd, Mrs. Bukola Adubi, for seeking collaboration with UI in nurturing the next generation of engineering professionals.
The DVC acknowledged that, despite universities’ efforts to align academic curricula with practical training, a disconnect between the academic and industrial sectors has persisted.
To address this gap, Professor Olapegba emphasized the need for synergy between universities and industries. He stated that such partnerships would expose students to current industry trends, equipping them with relevant skills for the evolving job market.
The DVC further affirmed UI’s readiness to collaborate with MicCom on internship placements, industrial training, scholarships, grants, and other initiatives that would enhance students’ industry readiness.
In her remarks, Mrs. Bukola Adubi, CEO of MicCom Cables and Wires Ltd and President of the Cable Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, expressed her company’s enthusiasm for working with UI to create transformative opportunities for engineering students.
Mrs. Adubi acknowledged the pivotal role academic institutions like UI play in shaping the future of engineering and technology.
Mrs. Adubi noted that a partnership between MicCom and UI “would not only bridge the academia-industry divide but also cultivate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among young engineers.”
