Nice Linus Writes UI’SRC to Recognize Reinstatement as Ordered by Court

Nice Linus, a 300-level Faculty of Law student, on Friday, March 28, 2025, sent a virtual copy of a notification letter to the 12th Assembly of the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan.

The letter formally notified the 12th Assembly of a court order while requesting immediate recognition as a member and majority leader-elect of the Obafemi Awolowo Hall constituency.

The Federal High Court, Ibadan, had on Wednesday, 19th March 2025, granted an ex-parte application suspending the disqualification of Nice Linus as a member and majority leader of the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan, until the completion of the court hearing on the matter.

In a letter addressed to the SRC, Linus informed the Council of her reinstatement following an order issued by Justice U. N. Agomoh.

“I write to notify the Council of my temporary reinstatement by order of the court dated 21st March 2025,” Linus stated in her letter.

Linus detailed the events leading to her removal, claiming that an internal memorandum from the Deputy Registrar, dated March 4, 2025, was used by the then-Speaker to bar her from participating in the 12th Assembly.

“I was prevented from performing my democratic duties as a duly elected honorable member of the 12th Assembly by the then-Speaker, who removed me from the 12th Assembly’s official group,” she wrote.

Additionally, she recounted how she was “disallowed from partaking in the inauguration ceremony and even assaulted at the venue.”

IndyPress had reported how Nice Linus, students and campus journalists were assaulted despite not being provoked at the swearing-in ceremony of the Covenant Odedele-led administration of the Students’ Union. A ‘misconduct’ which has been widely condemned by campus-based and mainstream media, with a focus on the defense of press freedom.

With no fair intervention from the Students’ Representative Council, Executive Council, or university management, Linus sought legal recourse.

“I filed an ex-parte application on March 12, wherein I sought five reliefs, among them an order quashing the decision of the Deputy Registrar as contained in the internal memorandum,” she stated.

The court subsequently granted the application on March 19, leading to her temporary reinstatement.

In her letter to the Students’ Representative Council, Linus emphasized that she expects the Legislative Council to acknowledge the court’s decision and reinstate her accordingly.

“The Council may duly recognize my reinstatement between today, 28th March 2025, and 12 p.m. on Saturday, 29th March 2025,” she stated.

She warned that any failure to comply could result in legal consequences.

“Actions or inactions contrary to the court order would lead to my instituting contempt of court proceedings against the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council. This may inevitably result in a jail term for as many as are accountable.”

“I trust that the leadership and members of this Honourable Council would continually

uphold ideals of justice, equity and goodwill, as the Council has been elected to do by the student populace.”

A virtual copy of the letter by Nice Linus has been received by the Clerk of Legislative Council, IndyPress confirmed.
