The Council of Hall Chairpersons, University of Ibadan, on Sunday, March 30, 2025, is proposing a sum of five thousand naira as students’ basic dues, IndyPress can report.

In a memorandum addressed to the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan, the Council proposed increasing the fees for all students across the halls of residence within the university.

Co-signed by Anifowose Nafisat, the Council’s Chairperson, and Adenekan Adeifeoluwa, the Secretary, the Council highlighted rising maintenance costs, improved hall services, and the need to enhance student welfare as reasons for the proposed increment.

The Council claimed that the current fee has been insufficient to meet acclaimed expenses like security, sanitation and infrastructural developments.

“Overtime, the current fee has proven insufficient to meet essential expenses, including sanitation, security, and infrastructural maintenance, which are critical to ensuring a conducive living environment for students,” the Council said.

“In light of this, we kindly request an opportunity to engage with the SRC in a formal discussion where we can present our rationale in detail, address any concerns, and explore possible measures to ensure that the increment is both justifiable and beneficial to the student body. We look forward to your cooperation and a favorable response regarding a suitable date for this discussion,” the Council wrote.

The Council’s decision has come at a time when the mass of students are grappling with other cost-demanding needs like the high cost of off-campus accommodation, introduced sundry charges which students in previous congresses described as ‘inexplicable and duplicated‘, and hiked fees which students had uniformly described as ‘outrageous‘.
