“Joining IndyPress Shaped Me” – Visiting Former Editor-in-Chief, John Dare Okafor, Tells Members

Members of the Great Independence Hall Press Organization, commonly referred to as IndyPress, have been charged to remain committed to campus journalism.

The admonition by the former Editor-in-Chief of IndyPress, John Dare Okafor, was given during his visit to the organization on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Mr. Okafor served as the Editor-in-Chief of IndyPress Organization during the 2021/2022 academic session.

Adressing members of the organization, Mr. Okafor listed the numerous opportunities that come with commitment to journalism.

He explained that his membership in IndyPress opened doors for him in mainstream journalism.

He assured members that their dedication would eventually yield rewards.

Recounting his experience as Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Okafor noted that his administration prioritized impact-driven stories.

He urged current members to uphold the long-standing tradition of excellence for which IndyPress is renowned.

“Joining IndyPress really shaped me. I learned a lot as a member of the organization,” Mr. Okafor said.

“You may not be paid for the work you do, but in reality, you are working, and not in vain. Your campus journalistic efforts will pay off one day. Just make sure you profile your works. You can open a LinkedIn account.”

“You have a big platform. There are former members of the organization who are doing very well now. Some write for mainstream media outlets and earn substantial incomes,” he added.

Ayodele Aduwo, the current Editor-in-Chief of IndyPress, expressed gratitude for the visit paid by former Editor-in-Chief, John Dare Okafor.

“It is good to have you. We really appreciate your visit and your continued commitment to the organization,” Ayodele Aduwo said.
