The Students’ Union Executive Council, University of Ibadan, on Friday, May 16, 2025, requested for the suspension of the approved Congress by the Students’ Representative Council.
Co-signed by the Students’ Union President, Covenant Odedele, and Segun Olowu, the General Secretary, the two cited alleged harassment of its members by some members of the 12th Assembly , who had visited to inquire about the protracted delay for the congress, as a concern.
Also referencing an altercation, which ensued between Zik and Mellanby freshers after the final match of the Inter-Hall Freshers’ Cup, the executives suggested that these incidents raise concerns about the potential disruption of the Congress.
“Recent concerning events have created a perceived threat to the safety and security of the planned Congress,” the Council wrote
“Regrettably, some members of the student body, and even Students’ Representative Council namely Nice Linus, Hon. Segun representing Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Hon. Shalom representing Elizabeth II Hall and others we couldn’t recognize engaged in the acts of harassment and obstructions towards the Students’ Union Building,” the executives alleged.
“These actions have raised significant concerns about the potential disruption and safety of the participants should the Congress proceed as planned.”
As earlier reported, the Students’ Representative Council will hold an emergency sitting later today to discuss the latest developments.
