Several students of the University of Ibadan have criticized the Students’ Union President, Covenant Odedele, for unilaterally cancelling Saturday’s convening Congress, following his leadership poor efforts at mobilizing students.
While addressing students at the SUB Foyer, Odedele cited the failure to meet the required quorum of 500 as the reason for the cancellation.
In response, students condemned the decision, describing it as insensitive to pressing student concerns.
They particularly faulted the Students’ Representative Council and the Students’ Union Executive Council for inadequate mobilization efforts ahead of the Congress.
They faulted the two organs for its reluctance and potential inability to sharply mobilize students to the Congress ground.
“I have been here for hours. The truth is that the Executive Committee and the SRC have shown that they do not understand students and how much of a commitment that they should give. Covenant sat in that office, expecting a full attendance, for a Congress that was called almost one and half an hour before it should commence,” one of the students lamented.
Another student, Adeyemi Gabriel, said he felt disappointed by the leadership’s weak mobilization and unreadiness to regard students.
“It appears like they are according to a given script, all in a bid to sabotage students fate like Aweda Bolaji and Busoye Matthias previous administration connived with the management to put student welfare under the bus. They are unready. With the fees deadline in less than twenty days, the two organs have shown us enough that they are not on the students side,” Adeyemi said.
Some students who gathered independently after the abrupt postponement of the congress was announced, decided to embark on effective sensitization and mobilization of their colleagues towards reconvening the congress in another short while.
