“Have a mind of repaying the loan as responsible citizens of Nigeria” – UI DVC Tells Students

The management of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, held the third edition of NELFUND sensitization program for its students.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Olapegba congratulated the students, describing beneficiaries of the students’ loan initiative as lucky.

‘The loan scheme has reduced the financial stress most students experience, and it has undoubtedly alleviated the financial burdens of parents and guardians in the country,” Professor Olapegba said.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor commended the Federal Government for the initiative and also appreciated the NELFUND team for collaborating with the University of Ibadan in facilitating seamless access to the loan, which has been promoting education for national development.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor urged the students to align with the government’s vision by maximizing the opportunity to achieve their academic goals and shape their future, charging the beneficiaries of NELFUND to have a mind of repaying the loan as responsible citizens of Nigeria.

The Liaison Officer of NELFUND who is also the Director, Information Technology and Media Services (ITeMS), UI, Mrs Abiodun Alao disclosed that 4,834 students and an additional tranche of 170 students applied and got the loan in the 2023/2024 session.

She explained that 4,809 students had applied for the 2024/2025 academic session, and their data had been uploaded and verified by the university. She advised the students to visit the physical support office at the NCC Digital Park, UI, for necessary assistance.

The Director, Monitoring and Evaluation of NELFUND, Mr Aliyu Mohammed, who led the NELFUND team, said they were glad to be at the university for a physical interactive session with the students after two virtual sensitization programs.

He explained the application guidelines and assured that loans and upkeep will be disbursed to those who have applied for the 2024/2025 academic session within the next two weeks.

Mrs Yemi Caxton, the Director of the NELFUND Clients Support Service, addressed knotty issues that emanated from questions received from applicants virtually. She stressed that NELFUND is a loan that must be refunded to enable equal opportunity for all Nigerian students. According to her, this will ensure continuity of the initiative.

Other members of the NELFUND Team were the Director, Servicom, Mr. Sola Fowobaje, Special Adviser to NELFUND, Mr. Akeem Lawal and Senior Manager, Strategic Communication, Mr. Fola Ogunniya, amongst other officers who were present at the program.
