In the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, 2025, several students of the University of Ibadan turned to the Access Bank branch on campus to fetch water amid the persistent water scarcity.
IndyPress observed that students from various halls of residence, including the Great Independence Hall and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, moved in groups to Access Bank, where there is only a single functioning water outlet.
As of the time of filing this report, students were still gathered at the site, waiting in long queues with buckets in hopes of getting water.
Reacting to the situation, Timileyin, a student, expressed deep frustration over the disruption to his academic schedule, citing his inability to prepare for an early morning lecture.
“The fact that you wake up and have to start looking for water everywhere is discouraging,” he said.
“I have a class by 8 a.m., and I don’t even know how I’m going to make it. After all the money we’ve paid, we’re still facing challenges like this.”
On Monday, the House Secretary of the Students’ Union, in a broadcast message to the student community, announced that electricity would be restored to campus, excluding certain areas such as Awo Hall, ITH, CMF, AOO, and CBN.
“Electricity will be restored to campus tonight. However, some areas like AWO, ITH, CMF, AOO and CBN are tentative for this night
Repairs will continue tomorrow,” the broadcast reads.
Contrarily, there has been no supply of electricity to the student community, IndyPress can report.
Electricity and water shortages have remained a recurring part of student life at the University of Ibadan, with no lasting solutions currently in place.
