The Students’ Union Executive Committee, University of Ibadan, on Tuesday, informed members of the Students’ Union of its successful apprehension of scammers.
The Students’ Union leadership disclosed this in a press release jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Covenant Odedele, and General Secretary, Segun Olowu.
The UI’SU leadership charged students to be security conscious about the current fraudulent activities targeting the student community.
The Union, in the memo, mentioned that the alleged fraudsters reached out to students under the guise of impersonation while demanding payment for services without the intention of rendering them.
The Union further clarified that such fraudulent activities would never be exhibited by both the university management and the Union.
“We have received credible reports of individuals impersonating student entrepreneurs, university staff, and house agents. These fraudsters are reaching out under the guise of offering assistance to clear extra years, secure accommodation, or to offer products and/or services; demanding payment in return services they cannot and do not intend to provide,” the Executive Committee wrote.
“Let us be clear: neither the University of Ibadan nor Students’ Union will ever solicit money from students for course clearance or payment of fees. Also, all university processes follow official procedures and should be verified through the appropriate channel.”
“Alongside, here is the list of security tips to stay face: verify all claims. cross-check any offer, or promise or transaction through official university departments or faculty offices. Avoid making payments. Never transfer for academic or housing services unless verified and officially approved.”
“Do not share personal information. Avoid giving out your matric number, course details, login credentials or financial details to unverified individuals. Be wary of urgency tactics. Scammers often create a false sense of urgency to pressure students into making hasty decisions. Report immediately. If you suspect fraudulent activity, contact the Students’ Union or the university security unit without delay.”
The Union assured that it would not allow the student community to be scammed.
