A week after the Saturday, June 7 sanitation exercise, uncleared waste remains piled up within the Great Independence Hall of Residence, University of Ibadan, raising health and environmental concerns, IndyPress reports.
The waste, including decaying bed foams, wooden planks, obsolete tyres, among others, was gathered during the sanitation exercise organized by the hall’s student leadership on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

In an interview with IndyPress, the Health Commissioner of the Great Independence Hall of Residence, Ojo Precious, on Friday, stated that the hall leadership is currently awaiting financial support from the Indy Hall Alumni Association to facilitate the disposal of the waste.
He further noted that the anticipated funding would also cover the removal of waste at the dump-site beside Indy Hall’s C-Block.
He assured that the hall leadership would take responsibility for disposing of the waste if the alumni fail to fulfill their promise.
“You know how active the alumni have been, right? Indy Hall alumni said a truck was coming to take up every dirt around us. They promised Monday. You know Monday was a public holiday. So, I don’t know whether it was exactly Monday or Tuesday. But I know it is either one of the two days that they promised,” Ojo Precious said.
“The alternative solution is that we want to reach out to the alumni body. Because I and AG have already spoken about it. According to what I observed, the alumni will keep to their promise. But if they don’t, we have to sponsor it ourselves,” he added.

Beside Indy Hall’s C-Block lies an unsightly waste site. It emits a pungent odour that disturbs nearby residents and loose debris that scatters with the wind, IndyPress observed.
