The Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, held its 11th Public Lecture at the Alumni Multipurpose Hall on Thursday, July 7, 2025.
The lecture, themed “Leveraging Technology and Digital Education for Mass Employment, Wealth Creation, and Poverty Alleviation,” was delivered by the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Karl Toriola, in honour of former Sigma Chief and CEO of First Bank Nigeria, Old Chief Dr. Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan.
In his address, Dr. Karl Toriola emphasized the urgent need to revamp Nigeria’s academic curriculum, describing it as a critical step in meeting contemporary societal needs.
“The curriculum that we run in our educational system from primary level onward is not fully aligned with the digital economy,” Dr. Toriola stated.
Stressing the importance of digital literacy, he added, “For us to create a generation of people with digital skills, we must change the curriculum from the foundation.”
Dr. Toriola further described digital skill acquisition as vital for remaining relevant in today’s labour market and encouraged participants to embrace digital learning.
Also speaking at the event, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, urged students to prioritize continuous learning as a pathway to growth.
The event was attended by notable personalities including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter Olapegba, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and other distinguished guests.
