The Students’ Union of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has condemned the suspension of two University of Ibadan students, Aduwo Ayodele, a 400-level student of History, and Mide Gbadegesin, a 700-level student at the Institute of African Studies, by the UI management over a protest against fee hikes.

The condemnation was contained in a memorandum jointly signed on Thursday, July 18, 2025, by Adio James (Students’ Union President), Alao Ayorinde (General Secretary), and Abiola David (Public Relations Officer).

Recall that on May 13, 2024, three students of the University of Ibadan, Aduwo Ayodele, Nice Linus (a 400-level student of Law), and Mide Gbadegesin, participated in a placard protest against the increase in school fees.

According to the Students’ Union leadership, the demonstration by the three students against the fee increment “was a courageous stand for accessible education, and not a crime.”

The Students’ Union executives further described their suspension by the University management as a means of undermining the right to education and freedom of expression.

The Union also called for the reinstatement of the suspended students and a reversal of the tuition fee hike.

“The UI3’s protest highlights the crises of affordability in education, forcing some students into desperate measures to survive. We cannot allow such injustice to stand. We pledge our full support to the UI3 and the #FeesMustFall movement, committing to mobilize our members and collaborate with civil society to ensure justice,” the memo reads.

“We call on the University of Ibadan to reinstate the UI3, reverse the fees hike and uphold students’ right to protest,” it added.
