Nice Linus , a 400-level Law student at the University of Ibadan has been summoned to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) for the hearing of a prolonged case tied to her participation in an anti-fee hike protest on May 13, 2024, IndyPress reports.
According to a letter signed by the university’s Deputy Registrar, Mr. S.O. Oyewunmi, the hearing is scheduled for 9:30 am on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the Conference Room, Students’ Affair Division.
The disciplinary action stems from a symbolic protest held during the inauguration ceremony of the Students’ Union Executive Committee and the Students’ Representative Council on May 13, 2024.
During the event, where Aweda Bolaji and Busoye Opeyemi Matthias were to be sworn-in as President and Speaker respectively, Nice Linus, and other two student activists, Ayodele Aduwo and Mide Gbadegesin, displayed placards raising attention to impending fee hikes, IndyPress gathered.
“The meeting is the continuation of the investigation on the allegation of misconduct bothering in surboninate/ unruly behavior, to wit, obstruction of the swearing-in ceremony for the 2023/2024 Newly Elected Executive of the Students’ Union by you, and two other students. Please note you must dress formally when you appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee. Failure to honor the visitation may earn you disciplinary action,” the memorandum reads.
Reacting, Nice Linus decried what she described as the continued victimization of herself and her colleagues, expressing doubt that she would receive a fair hearing.
Linus said, “The UI3, Aduwo Ayodele, Mide Gbadegesin, and I, who held the May 13, 2024 protest, were charged with “jointly committed offences.” These alleged offences included obstruction of the swearing-in ceremony, insubordination, unruly behavior and “gross misconduct.”
“‘Our “jointly committed offence” implied we would be tried together for the same charges. At the first panel, on July 2, 2024, the three of us were at the panel separately. Consistently, the SDC failed to give adequate notice before the hearings. On Monday, June 30, 2025, the panel held a sitting on the case. I wasn’t notified in time. They only reached me over the weekend, and power outages worsened communication.
“As a result, I didn’t receive my invitation letter until July 1, 2025. Following that, I wasn’t invited to the Central SDC, which held on July 14, 2025, where Aduwo and Gbadegesin were suspended for four semesters. My latest invitation is resulting from this disparity. Since, I could not be reached officially to appear at the second panel, I wasn’t invited to the central SDC. I got the latest invitation this last Monday.”
“Historically, the Students’ Disciplinary Committee (SDC) was created after repeated claims that student activists were denied fair hearing, which tainted managerial decisions. Ironically, it has become a tool for suppression, providing the opposite of fairness.”
“Logically, the SDC cannot guarantee fair hearing. Since the accuser acts as prosecutor, judge, jury and executioner. The accused cannot realistically expect an outcome unfavourable to the accuser. With a long record of victimization, and many witnesses attesting to it, we again await the outcome of this predetermined trial. Be rest assured that it will stand as another indictment against the SDC panel”
It will be recalled that Ayodele Aduwo and Mide Gbadegesin were handed four semesters suspension after the Central Students Disciplinary Committee(CSDC) sitting, held on Monday, July 14, 2025.
48 days after their suspension, Nice Linus has been summoned to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at the Conference Room, Students’ Affair Division.
