The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal government to address the unmet demands of its members.

‎According to a statement signed by the President of the Union, Professor Christopher Piwuna, on the 5th of October, 2025, and addressed to ASUU members, the Union threatened to go on a two-week warning strike if the government fails to implement the negotiated agreement and its demands at the expiration of the ultimatum.

“The National Executive of our Union, at its emergency meeting of 29th September, 2025, having evaluated the results of the referendum held across our branches, resolved to give government a fourteen-day ultimatum to resolve the issues contained in the negotiated document which has been transmitted to the government since February, 2025,” the statement reads

“It was further resolved that the Union will proceed on a two-week warning strike at the expiration of the ultimatum if government fails to take acceptable and satisfactory steps to address the lingering issues. The resolutions were immediately communicated to the Honorable Minister of Labour, the Honourable Minister of Education and Nigeria Labour Congress,” it added.

One week after the resolutions were submitted, the Union stated that there has been no significant response from the government.

‎ “It is now one week since those resolutions were reached and communicated to the appropriate authorities. I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be reported,” it added.

‎ASUU further charged all its members to prepare for full mobilization, warning against apathy while describing the 14-day warning strike as a struggle for their welfare, the future of the Nigeria’s educational system, and the fight against the mass “Japa”syndrome.
