Fifty-six B-Block residents of the Great Independence Hall of Residence, University of Ibadan, have been fined ₦1,000 each for allegedly making the hall’s environment untidy, IndyPress reports.
The affected area, described as “messy,” is situated around the B-Block axis of the hall.
The rooms affected include B-55, B-54, B-53, B-56, B-57, B-58, B-16, B-17, B-18, B-13, B-14, and B-15, along with eight box rooms located on the affected floors.

According to some affected residents who spoke to IndyPress, the hall portal visited their block around 11AM on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, complained about the untidy environment, and imposed fines on them.
A student who demanded anonymity due to the fear of reprimand, complained about the fine, describing it as unfair and asserting that no student was caught guilty of the offence they were fined for.
“The woman came to our floor and got angry with the fact that our environment is dirty. So, she fined us ₦1,000 each and gave us the ultimatum of 48 hours. To me, this doesn’t make any sense because they did not catch us messing up the environment ,” he told IndyPress.

Another resident lamented the stressful process of paying the fine.“I even wanted to pay the fine in cash but they said no. Now, I have to go through the process of going to the Black Market to make the payment and tender the receipt at Tekana Tamuno Building. This is even happening at a time I have a class to attend,” he said.
A student also expressed dissatisfaction over an extra fee attached to the payment.
“Wetin pain me most be say I go dey pay ₦500 charges,” he lamented.

In an interview with IndyPress, the House Secretary of Indy Hall, Obinelo Chisom, pledged to intervene in response to the incident.
“Till I get further information, I can’t say much. However, we’ll try and mediate with the supervisor as the welfarism of Katangites is priority,” he said.
In a separate interview with IndyPress on the same day, Peculiar Adedeji, the Administrator General of the hall, said he would investigate and address the concern.
“This is my first time hearing this. I will make my own investigation and confirm all the allegations and everything, and see the way we can solve it,” Peculiar told IndyPress.
“She Instructed Me to Fine Them” -Indy Hall Portal Says
In an interview with IndyPress, the portal who issued the fines explained that the directive came from the Hall Supervisor.

“Yes. The Supervisor sent one of the students to come and call me. When I got there, I sighted it myself. From B-13 to B-15 ground floor, all the area was messed up. Since she was the one that saw it by herself, there is nothing I can do about it.she instructed me to fine them,” she told IndyPress.
She further said that failure to pay the fine within the stipulated deadline might lead to the ejection of the affected students from the hall.
