The African Studies Students’ Association (ASSA), Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, held its handover ceremony on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
The event, which was held at the Drapers Hall, Institute of African Studies, UI, saw the inaugural transition of leadership of the association from the outgone administration led by Awoyemi Michael Ayomide to the current one, to be led by Quadril Ifayomi.
In his farewell address, Awoyemi Michael, the Erstwhile President of the association, reflected on the achievements and challenges faced by his administration.
“As initially mentioned, we reached for the sky. We pursued perfection and excellence, but not all of our ambitions were realised,” Awoyemi Michael said.
He further highlighted accomplished projects such as the initiative of a new secretariat building, noting that his administration left no debts.
Awoyemi added that his administration efficiently managed the resources of the association to procure essential materials, print official letterheads, organise orientation programmes for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 sets, revive the annual ASSA Week themed “Afínjú: The Critical Mind,” and host the Annual Sankofa Conference.
In his inaugural speech, the new President of the association, Quadril Ifayomi, pledged transparency and unity.
“Leadership, after all, is not about the position we hold, but the difference we make. Together we will create a student community where voices are heard, welfare is taken care of and every dream is encouraged,” Ifayomi, the new President of the association said.
The ceremony also featured a gyration performance by the Kegite Club UI and had students and staff, including Professor Sola Olorunyomi, Director, Institute of African Studies, UI, in attendance.
The current ASSA Executive Council is to be led by Alimi Quadri Ifayomi as the President; Uchemadu Favour as Vice President; Adesiyan Jesufemi Oluwatimilehin as Secretary of State; Olalere Victor as Information Minister; Akinfenwa Lois as Finance Minister; Awokunle Tolulope as Head of Treasury and Salam Sukurat Abisola as Deputy Secretary of State.
