The Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, held a cyber awareness training today, November 15, 2025.

The training, which took place at the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Chamber, Kunle Adepeju Memorial Building, focused on  enlightening the student participants on cyber safety and Artificial Intelligence.

Speaking on the topic “Cyber Security Awareness and Introduction to AI,” Mr. Oluwadare Fredrick, Co-director of ANSRD Solutions, described cyber security as essential in today’s digital world, noting that cyber attackers often target people who are “vulnerable.”

Addressing cyber security, he emphasized the importance of activating the two-step verification process on WhatsApp.

He added that using public Wi-Fi, such as school Wi-Fi “poses a greater risk to the user device that it could lead to the exposing of such user information to the outside world.”

He advised that if anyone must use public Wi-Fi, they should ensure their device applications are up to date.

“Don’t use public wifi to transfer money, if you must use public wifi, don’t use it to open your bank app, school portal, email and other sensitive applications,” he warned.

Mr. Oluwadare further mentioned that if someone discovers their personal information has been leaked by an organization, they can sue such an organization under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023).

In his advice to the student participants, he said, “Think before sharing, limit what you share about your relation and personal relationship.”

Giving tips on what to do after clicking on a wrong link or suspicious site, which he described as something that can lead to unauthorized access to one’s data, he said,“first, put your phone on airplane mode, change all passwords, contact the institution ICT Unit, and document what happens after the incident.”

He further advised users to be more careful in protecting their information.

He warned, “stop using one password for all your accounts, do a regular back up, zero OTP sharing, delete apps you don’t use for a long time.”

While delivering the second aspect of the topic, “Introduction to AI,” he described Artificial Intelligence as a sophisticated tool that must be used responsibly.

“Be factual and precise when asking AI questions, fact check the AI answers, use AI for learning and not for cheating, know what you want AI to analyze for you what to be taken and what not to be taken, and specify when you prompt AI,” he added.
