The Katanga Republic Independent Electoral Commission (KRIEC), Great Independence Hall of Residence, University of Ibadan, has increased the cost of electoral nomination forms by 80 to 100% over the last two academic sessions, IndyPress has learned.
An IndyPress review of the nomination form prices over the last two academic sessions confirmed 80 to 100% increment.
For instance, the nomination form for the position of Administrator General was priced at ₦6,000 during the 2022/2023 academic session. It was increased to ₦10,000 in 2023/2024 and has now risen to ₦12,000.
Similarly, the Secretary of State nomination form, which was ₦6,000 in 2022/2023, increased to ₦8,000 in 2023/2024 and ₦10,000 in 2024/2025.
Other executive positions, including the House Secretary, Public Relations Officer, and Sports Commissioner, have seen their nomination fees rise from ₦5,000 to ₦9,000 over the same period.
Additionally, the cost of Floor Representative nomination forms has increased from ₦3,000 to ₦6,000 in the last two academic sessions.
When asked by IndyPress the reason behind the increment, the Public Relations Officer of KRIEC, Abdulhakeem Abudulraman, stated the KRIEC Chairman, Ayinde Samuel, was in the right position to give a clarification.
When IndyPress reached out to the Chairman of Katanga Republic Independent Electoral Commission, Ayinde Samuel, to get a clarification regarding the perpetual increment in the nomination forms, his response could not be ascertained.
“We have a press member who is part of the KRIEC. You can meet him to make your inquiry. I have already assigned that task to the press man, which is why he is a member of the KRIEC. So, anything that has to do with the press and the election, just reach out to him,” Mr. Ayinde told IndyPress.
The failure of the Chairman of the KRIEC to provide a clarification regarding the increment of the nomination forms raises public accountability concerns.
