Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter Olapegba, described the Sigma Club as an organisation with a longstanding commitment to educational development and social responsibility.
“Sigma Club has become a permanent feature on the landscape of the University of Ibadan. It is a club that has shown resilience, integrity, and the ability to engage meaningfully in corporate social responsibility,” he said.
He also congratulated the finalist schools for their dedication and perseverance.
“I want to particularly congratulate the six schools for making it to the final. It must have been a long and tedious journey competing with your peers, but today you are here because of your hard work,” he added.
He further urged the students to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship.
“When you engage in competitions like this, it is not just about winning. It is about participation, gaining knowledge, interaction, and building friendships,” he noted.
Recounting the evolution of the competition, the Sigma Chief, Toyinbo Adedeji explained that the quiz began as a modest initiative involving a small number of schools.
According to him, the first edition, then known as the Sigma Club Quiz Competition, featured ten secondary schools within Ibadan North Local Government Area, the birthplace of the University of Ibadan and the cradle of Sigma Club.
The competition later expanded to cover the entire Oyo State, attracting over 200 secondary schools.
Subsequently, it grew into the Roseline Etuokwu Southwest Sigma Quiz Competition, extending participation to the six states of the Southwest geopolitical zone; Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos with over 1,000 schools participating, including institutions from remote parts of the region.
It later evolved into the Roseline Etuokwu Sigma National Secondary School Quiz Competition, opening participation to secondary schools across all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Since 2023, more than 5,000 schools nationwide have participated in the competition, with over ₦100 million in prizes awarded to outstanding schools.
The Sigma Chief noted that the competition remains one of the club’s major initiatives aimed at promoting academic excellence and educational development in Nigeria.
He added that other educational interventions by the club include the Sigma Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme and the Sigma Tertiary Essay Competition.
This year’s edition recorded over 1,900 registered schools, further demonstrating the competition’s growing national reach and impact.
Also present at the event were Old Sigmaites and the Father of the Day, Dr. Gani Adeniran and other distinguished guests.
