Idia Hall Announces Death of 100-Level Student

The University of Ibadan community has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 100-level student of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Abass Motunrayo Anuoluwapo.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, was confirmed in an official statement released by the Queen Idia Hall Executive Council, Team Nexus.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own, Abass Motunrayo Anuoluwapo, a 100-level student of the Mathematics Department, Faculty of Science, who was recently unwell,” the statement read.

Although full medical details surrounding her death have not been disclosed, the hall executives confirmed that it was linked to a recent illness.

The statement, signed by the Hall Chairperson, Mudashiru Oyindamola, and General Secretary, Adelola Precious, described the loss as painful and one that has deeply affected residents of Queen Idia Hall and the wider university community.

Sources within the hall revealed that news of her death began circulating among students in the early hours of the day, creating an atmosphere of shock, disbelief, and grief.

Some residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the deceased had been visibly unwell in recent days. However, the severity of her condition was not widely known, making the news of her death unexpected for many.

A resident who spoke with IndyPress disclosed that the student was rushed to the University Health Service, popularly known as Jaja Clinic, where she was confirmed dead.

“She had been having health issues and was rushed to Jaja this morning. It was there that she was confirmed dead,” the student said.

As of press time, the exact nature of her illness has not been made public by the University Health Service.

The Students’ Union has also acknowledged the incident and expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
