Tension briefly erupted at Great Independence Hall, University of Ibadan, late Saturday night, March 21, 2026, following a confrontation between an unidentified driver and a former Hall Governor of Abdulsalam Abubakar Hall, IndyPress reports.

At the scene when Abefele Officers arrived

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident began as a verbal disagreement near the hall’s wash area after concerns were raised about the manner in which the driver, reportedly operating a Mercedes-Benz CLA 350, entered the hall premises.

The disagreement nearly escalated into a physical confrontation before residents intervened.

Recounting how the incident began, the former Abdulsalam Abubakar Hall Governor explained that he approached the driver to caution him about driving recklessly within the hall environment, especially with newly resumed students moving around the premises.

“The way he drove in, the porter was there. That was why I came in front of his car to tell him that freshers had just resumed and the way he drove could hit someone. The next thing he told me was that I was mad and stupid and that I would not graduate,” he said.

Another eyewitness alleged that during the confrontation, the driver reportedly retrieved a spanner from his vehicle, drawing the attention of other residents who intervened.

This reportedly led to further exchanges between the driver and some students present at the scene, creating a brief period of unrest within the hall.

In the course of the incident, one student was also reported injured.

IndyPress observed that the driver and vehicle involved remained within the hall premises until officials of the University Security Unit, Abefele arrived at the scene.

Also present at the scene after intervention were the SU President Deboye and the House Secretary who came as a result of a student who was rushed to the University Health Service popularly known as Jaja Clinic.

Speaking with IndyPress, the Administrator General of the Great Independence Hall of Residence, Obinelo Chisom described the incident as disagreements between a non-UIite who was driving recklessly in the hall and student residents.

“There were disagreements concerning a non-UIite who was driving recklessly. Some students confronted him and it led to altercations between the students and the driver in particular, alongside some of his guys. So however, it was settled,” he said.

“He apologized to the entire hall and the students were also taken to the Abefele unit where their car was confiscated until investigations are completed.”

Obinelo also clarified that the injured student who was taken to Jaja was not directly affected by the issue, but while trying to leave the scene of the event slipped, fell, and hit his head.

“The student in question that was taken also to Jaja was not directly affected by the issue, but while he was trying to get away from the altercations, slipped, fell, and hit his head. So he and his friend rushed to Jaja. However, we reached there, he has been handled with care, all thanks to the Jaja officials for their swift response,” he added.

The AG also promised that such will not occur again, while acknowledging the intervention of key individuals at the incident.

“So everything has been settled and we hope incidents as such don’t repeat itself in the hall again. Thank you.” Indy Hall AG Obinelo told IndyPress.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Students’ Union President, Deboye Temidayo at the Abefele Office in regard to the Incident and a reported occurrence in Zik Hall of Residence as of the time of filing this report were unsuccessful.

An officer on duty at the University Security Unit, Abefele, declined to comment on the incident, asking IndyPress to return the following day for an official briefing.
