Oyo State Police Command Confirms Death Incident at UI Swimming Pool, Launches Investigation

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed reports concerning the discovery of the body of an unidentified teenage boy at the University of Ibadan swimming pool on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

Speaking with IndyPress, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Ayanlade Olayinka affirmed that the incident had been officially reported to the police.

“The Oyo State Police Command is aware of the report circulating in the media concerning the discovery of the body of an unidentified teenage boy at the University of Ibadan swimming pool on 26th March, 2026,” he said.

He explained that information about the incident was received from the institution’s Chief Security Officer, who reported that the body of the victim, estimated to be between 14 and 15 years old, was sighted floating on the surface of the swimming pool earlier that day.

“Factually, information was received from the institution’s Chief Security Officer that the body of the victim, aged about 14–15 years, was sighted on the surface of the swimming pool earlier that day,” he added.

According to him, detectives promptly visited the scene after the report was received.

“Detectives promptly visited the scene, where preliminary observations revealed that the body had been removed from the pool and placed beside it,” he said.

He further noted that blood was observed oozing from the victim’s mouth and nose, with slight bruises also visible on the nose.

Items suspected to belong to the deceased, including a pair of shoes and a shirt, were found close to the pool. Bloodstains were also observed within the pavilion area.

The police spokesperson added that the body was evacuated to the General Hospital, Adeoyo, Ibadan, where the victim was confirmed dead on arrival and subsequently deposited at the mortuary.

He stated that the Command has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The case is being treated as a suspected murder, and the Command has commenced a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Oyo State Police Command PRO told IndyPress.

He also urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continue.

“Members of the public are urged to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information as investigations are ongoing,” he added.
