The University of Ibadan, through the University Health Service, has issued a health advisory against what it termed a “growing trend” of egg donation for IVF (In-Vitro-Fertilization) amongst female students, on the 15th of April, 2025.
In her official release, signed by the director of Health Service, Dr. Aderonke Ajav, it stated that it has come to the attention of the school that there is a “growing trend within the University Campus involving the participation and/or recruitment of female students as egg donoes for In-Vitro-Fertilization (IVF) by individuals, agents, or agencies.
It further stressed that the practice should not be considered as “a permanent source of income, side hustle.”
Stating the implications of the practice, such as “breast tenderness, abdominal pain, potential injury to the bladder” amongst others, it stated that research is still “inconclusive” as to “who is medically safe to donate”, and as to the frequency of donation.
The school also cautioned that the procedure has not been delinked from being a potential cause of “cancer.” As a result, the school has advised all students to seek professional advice before considering egg donation.
