Several students of the University of Ibadan have expressed dissatisfaction with the recently announced deadline for tuition fee payment.
On May 6, 2025, the university management, through an official memorandum, set Sunday, June 6, 2025, as the deadline for the payment of tuition fees.
Speaking with IndyPress, Owen, a 200-level Pharmacy student, described the deadline as too soon and expressed concern about his ability to meet it.
“Actually, I know the deadline is June 6, but it is too early. I won’t be able to meet it. I don’t know if there is anything that can be done,” he said.
Supporting this view, Idunu Oluwanimi, a 200-level student in the Department of Animal Science, revealed that she did not register for the NELFUND loan scheme, as her education is funded by her parents. He appealed for an extension of the deadline.
“The school fees deadline should be shifted. It caught me off guard, and I honestly don’t know where to get the money from,” he said.
“They should pity us. We’re not children of the federal government. We are our parents’ responsibility. They should please extend it,” he added.
Anu, a 300-level student of Industrial Production Engineering, echoed similar concerns.
“The deadline is very short. I wish they could extend it. Even if I wanted to register for the NELFUND loan, it wouldn’t be processed before the deadline,” he said.
Timileyin Ogundare, a 100-level student in the Faculty of the Social Sciences, also criticized the timing of the deadline. He decried the financial burden he faces, describing the deadline as unrealistic.
“My school fees amount to ₦176,500, excluding the ₦60,000 hostel fee, hall dues, Jaja Clinic registration, and faculty and departmental dues,” he explained.
“To me, the deadline is too sudden. Given the current economic situation in the country, the deadline should fall around the sixth or seventh week of the semester,” he added.
With less than two weeks left before the deadline, many students remain uncertain about how they will meet the requirement, calling on the university management for understanding and a possible extension.
