FG, ASUU Reach Agreement Following Renegotiation of 2009 Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has reached an agreement with the Federal Government of Nigeria on the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement.

This agreement was reached on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, after concluding the renegotiation of the agreement.

“After years of delays, negotiations, and struggles, ASUU has officially reached a new agreement with the Federal Government on December 23, 2025, concluding the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement,” ASUU wrote.

According to the statement, key highlights of the agreement include a 40% salary increase for academic staff, improved pension benefits equivalent to annual salary at retirement (age 70).

The agreement also includes better university funding model with dedicated allocations for research, libraries, labs, equipment, and staff development.

Others include Proposed National Research Council (NRC) to fund research with at least 1% of Nigeria’s GDP, stronger university autonomy & academic freedom, elected academic leadership (Deans/Provosts), with only Professors eligible,

ASUU also highlighted no victimization of anyone involved in the struggle as part of the agreement.

According to the ASUU, the agreement is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, with a scheduled review after three years.

“Agreement takes effect from January 1, 2026 and will be reviewed after 3 years,” it added.

The staff union leadership has also called on the government to implement the agreement without delay and extend negotiations to other university unions to ensure stability in the system.
