The University of Ibadan has inaugurated a committee to develop a University Policy on the Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for both staff and students.
When operational, the policy is expected to guide responsible and ethical engagement with artificial intelligence tools across teaching, learning, research, and administrative activities within the university.
Speaking at the inauguration, the UI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, described artificial intelligence as a powerful tool with significant benefits for innovation, learning, and problem-solving, but cautioned that its rapid evolution requires careful oversight.
He likened AI to a “wildfire,” noting that its dynamic nature makes ethical regulation necessary, particularly within academic environments.
The Vice-Chancellor therefore charged members of the committee to develop a robust and proactive institutional policy capable of responding to the fast-changing landscape of artificial intelligence.
The committee is convened by Professor Onifade, Director of the university’s Distance Learning Centre.
Speaking at the event, Professor Onifade recalled recent global engagements on ethical AI governance led by UNESCO and commended the University of Ibadan for taking steps to develop a policy framework tailored to its institutional needs.
He also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the confidence reposed in the committee and assured that members would work diligently to produce a policy aligned with international best practices.
