The Central Bank of Nigeria has raised alarm over the circulation of fake messages, emails, and online communications designed to mislead Nigerians and compromise personal data.
This was disclosed in an official press release signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs Hakama Sidi-Ali, on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications purporting to originate from or be associated with the Bank, which are intended to misinform members of the public,” the statement reads.
According to the release, these messages often prompt recipients to click suspicious links and spread false information regarding the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy matters, with the intent of compromising personal data.
The apex bank advised members of the public to verify all information through its official website and recognised media platforms.
Nigerians were also urged to refrain from clicking unknown links or sharing personal information on suspicious websites, emails, or digital platforms.
Additionally, it also called on the public to report any suspected fraudulent sites, emails, or messages to law enforcement authorities.
“The CBN remains fully committed to safeguarding the Nigerian financial system and continues to strengthen its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to protect the public against digital fraud,” it added.
