The disciplinary committee of the Students’ Representatives Council on Saturday, 3rd of December, 2022 has recommended the suspension of the Students’ Union Public Relations Officer, Olalekan Micheal.
The committee made the recommendation following the conclusion of several weeks of independent investigation into allegations of financial misconduct and constitutional breach against his office.
Recall that a few weeks ago, an investigation by UCJUI had revealed how the PRO flouted various provisions of the constitution, particularly in his handling of the union’s WhatsApp TV.
The committee concluded that just like UCJUI had reported, the committee acknowledged that the PRO breached “the provisions of article V, section 5(I) and (II), Article V, section 5(III) and Article XXVIII, section 1B, subsection (III).
The disciplinary committee also concluded that the PRO has extensively abused his office and the mandate given to him by students of the institution.
It then recommended that the PRO should be suspended from office for three weeks. “1. In direct, conscious breach of article V, section (I) and (II), the committee recommends that a two-weeks suspension from office be adopted” and “as regards the conscious breach of article V, section 5 (III) the committee recommends a one-week suspension from office,” the report by the committee read in part.
Furthermore, the committee recommended that a “public apology be made by the office of the PRO to the student body of the university” and that OMA must not be allowed to run any private WhatsApp TV while in his current office.
The House postponed the vote on the adoption of the recommendations till its next sitting.
