Silence

By: Nnamdi Ochi

It never really goes silent

It slips between the gaps,

Seeps into the cracks

But to occupy the space is unnatural

The animals cry

The insects chirp and buzz

The lazy wind rushes loudly by

The light announce themselves with cheers

And those who stay awake like me

Walk around, speaking in whispers

Even when I’m alone, I speak, I move, I notice

My noise is heard and not dampened

It never really goes silent

I stand in the gaps and fill the cracks

I’m heard by the crying animals

Startle the chirping insects

Am felt by the wind that rushes

Caressed by the lights and darkness

My existence is noisy

It doesn’t wish for silence till it’s end

And to wish for it would be to seek

To make me less of me
