Elemide Daniel, University of Ibadan Students’ Union House Secretary, has expressed the Union’s strong objection to a proposed 100% hike in transportation fees.
Recall that the Students’ Union convened a meeting to discuss transportation concern on Friday, 25th October, 2024.
Speaking with IndyPress, the House Secretary stated that a hundred percent increment proposed by the cab operators was ‘outrageous’ and unacceptable.
“It was not the Intra Campus Committee that proposed the prices. It was the campus transport operators; keke and cab guys; that proposed the prices. And their proposition was hundred percent across all places in the University,” Elemide said.
“Hundred percent increment. That means that anywhere that is one hundred naira becomes two hundred naira, and anywhere that is one hundred and fifty naira becomes three hundred. As well as price for drop, one thousand naira”.
“We rejected it. Yeah, and we have been reviewing the prices, making sure that it is fair enough, and not outrageous”.
“The proposed prices from the campus cab and tricycle operators are outrageous. It is too much for students to bear,” he added.
Elemide further said that the new transportation pricelist would be out, while assuring that it would be student-friendly.
“The new prices will be out soon. But we trust it is going to be more favourable and it won’t be as high/hard for students,” Elemide concluded.
