Contraceptive Choices and Sexual Health Awareness in UI

By: Femi-Adeniyi Joshua

As a student at the University of Ibadan, managing your reproductive health is crucial. This includes preventing unwanted pregnancies and protecting yourself from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). A combination of education, careful selection of suitable health measures, access to resources, and consistent application of preventative strategies is necessary to achieve this.

Hormonal contraceptives, such as birth control pills, are effective in preventing pregnancy. They work by controlling hormone cycles and preventing ovulation. However, they require daily consumption and can have side effects. Alternative contraceptive methods include hormonal injections, implants, barrier methods (condoms), intrauterine devices (IUDs), emergency contraception (morning-after pill), and fertility-awareness-based methods (FABMs).

The choice of contraceptive method depends on individual lifestyle, health, and preferences. It is essential to consider factors such as frequency of sexual partnerships, health conditions, and previous experiences with contraceptive methods. The University of Ibadan Health Centre offers counseling, IUD fittings, and hormonal method prescriptions to support students in making informed decisions.

Understanding and using contraceptive methods correctly can help students manage their reproductive health. This enables them to focus on academic and personal growth without health problems. Education, access to resources, and a proactive approach are key to maintaining good sexual health. By taking control of their reproductive health, students can confidently navigate their academic and personal lives.

The University of Ibadan Health Centre provides various resources to support students in managing their reproductive health. These resources include educational courses, workshops, and peer education programs. By utilizing these resources and taking a proactive approach to reproductive health, students can ensure a healthy and successful academic experience.
