The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union has approved a total sum of ₦5,719,770 for the 2026 Freshers’ Week.

The approval was disclosed by the Chairman of the SRC Financial Committee, Hon. Abiola Olaniyi, during the 13th Assembly sitting held on April 25, 2026, at the Kunle Adepeju Building, University of Ibadan.

According to the committee’s report, the approved budget covers key Freshers’ Week activities, including Rally and Rave, Orientation, Oratory, Cultural Carnival, Theatre Night, Sports and Health, Dinner and Pageantry, as well as publicity and other logistical needs.

Originally, a proposed budget of ₦12,487,462 alongside an additional ₦1,942,100 allocation for pageantry was presented by the Students’ Union Assistant General Secretary, Eselie Fidelia.

Speaking on the delay to the budget review, Hon. Abiola noted that the Office of the Assistant General Secretary delayed due the committee’s review process to the late submission of the budget.

“On a normal day, we are not meant to write to request the Freshers’ budget,” he said.

He further disclosed that the final budget document was received at 11:32 PM on April 1, just days before the commencement of Freshers’ Week.

“Promotional countdown materials were already in circulation before the committee received the proposal,” he said.

Speaking on why the Financial Committee approved the budget prior to its presentation before the legislative house, the SRC Speaker, Rt. Hon. John Oludele, attributed the move to constitutional provisions.

He also cited time constraints as a factor that influence that decision.
