By Abdulrasheed Olokoto

“I will actively engage hall authorities and relevant bodies to improve access to quality sporting equipment. Existing facilities and equipment will be properly maintained through monitoring and accountability.” – Oyewumi Temiloluwa

Beyond the mere politics of an election lies the true test: the proof of competency and the actual delivery of outlined promises as intended. On Saturday, December 20, 2025, the Great Independence Hall held its 2025/2026 election. This electoral process brought Oyewumi Temiloluwa Adeolu, a 400-level student from the Faculty of Education, into office as the Hall’s Sports Commissioner.

To understand the weight of this role, one must look at the constitutional responsibilities of the Sports Commissioner as stipulated in Chapter 2, Article 3, Section III, Subsection 9, Paragraph (1-6) of the Indy Hall’s Constitution.

These provisions state that the Sports Commissioner shall be in charge of all sporting activities and take custody of all sporting equipment and recreational facilities in the hall; he shall see to the welfare of all sportsmen; shall be co-responsible for the affairs of the hall’s gym house.

Other responsibilities include that he shall serve as the Chairman of the Supporters Club; he is also responsible for liaising with the Hall Management on all matters relating to sports and he is obliged to perform other functions as may be delegated by the constitution or the Administrator General.

In alignment with these provisions, Oyewumi Temiloluwa Adeolu has promised to ensure his consistent availability during sporting activities. In instances where he is absent for a tangible reason, he has assured Katangites that an active member of the sports committee will be present to represent him and oversee activities.

Furthermore, he intends to establish a robust communication and maintenance framework. This includes conducting weekly checkups via WhatsApp and holding monthly physical meetings. These measures are designed to ensure that sportsmen remain in good condition and to guarantee the continued accessibility and security of all sporting equipment.

Apart from his constitutional duties, he made seven promises to Katangites, i.e., the student residents of the Great Independence Hall of Residence. His plans include: structuring of sports calendar, continuation of inter-block & inter-fans competitions, scouting and identification of talents, improving training and practice sessions, Upgrading and Maintenance of sports equipment, reward and recognition of players, and creation of various sports teams.

Structured Sports Calendar

He promised to develop and implement a comprehensive, semester-based sports calendar that clearly outlines all sporting activities, training periods, trials, and competitions which will be held in the hall.

“I will work with team captains, sports coordinators, and hall executives to draft a day to day organized sporting calendar and schedule for different sports. The calendar will include training schedules, competitions and friendly matches against teams. It will be shared early through notice boards and digital platforms to ensure everyone is informed,” he claimed.

Continuation of Inter-Block & Inter-Fans Competitions

He promised to continue these competitions and make videos.

“Video coverage of goals and some memorable moments would be captured to make it more interesting,” he mentioned.

He further stated to expand sports opportunities, ensure inclusivity and diverse activities for all Katangites, and champion facility improvements and equipment acquisition for optimal training.

Talent Identification and Scouting

He promised to establish a deliberate talent identification system through open trials, competitions, and training sessions.

“I will organize open trials during inter-block competitions and training sessions. Talented athletes will be documented and monitored. It also prevents overdependence on a few athletes,” he stated.

Improved Training & Practice Sessions

He claimed that training sessions focused on overall athletic development; regular assessment of progress will help athletes improve consistently while preventing burnout and fatigue. He therefore promised to work closely with team captains and coaches to introduce training plans that emphasize fitness, technical skills, discipline, teamwork, and mental preparedness.

“I will collaborate with team captains to develop weekly training plans. Training sessions will focus on fitness, technical skills, teamwork, and discipline. Progress will be reviewed periodically to ensure improvement. Development will involve structured training, mentorship, and exposure to competitive games,” he claimed.

Equipment Upgrade & Maintenance

He promised to actively engage the hall authorities and relevant bodies to improve access to quality sporting equipment, and existing facilities and equipment will be properly maintained through monitoring and accountability systems.

“I will take stock of existing equipment and identify urgent needs. I will liaise with hall authorities and relevant committees for upgrades. A maintenance and accountability system will be introduced to prevent misuse. This would be done by setting up a “SPORT MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE.” This is important because good equipment improves training quality and safety and proper maintenance extends equipment lifespan, athletes perform better in a professional and safe environment,” he confidently promised.

Recognition & Reward System

He promised to introduce a structured recognition system that celebrates outstanding performances, commitment, leadership, and sportsmanship. Recognition which may include awards, certificates, and public acknowledgment during hall events.

“I will introduce awards for performance, commitment, leadership, and sportsmanship. Recognition that will be given during hall events or sports gatherings. Achievements will be publicly acknowledged,” he assured.

He further explained that this promise would be carried out by putting a media team for proper sports coverage, there would be a platform for Athlete of the Week, this would contain a short documentary of highlights of the respective individual.

Creation of Various Sports Teams

He also disclosed his intention to expand the hall’s sporting structure through the deliberate creation and strengthening of various sports teams such as basketball, volleyball, and esports.

“For traditional sports like basketball and volleyball, I will work with experienced players and coaches to ensure proper training, fitness routines, and tactical development. Regular practice sessions and friendly matches will be organized to build team chemistry and competitiveness,” he said.

“For esports, I will establish a recognized team structure with registered players, clear rules, and organized competitions. Online and in-hall tournaments will be introduced to ensure fair participation and visibility, while encouraging responsible gaming,” he added.

According to him, creating multiple sports teams increases inclusion, ensuring that students with different interests and strengths have a place in hall sports. It promotes talent discovery, improves participation, and strengthens hall representation across various sporting platforms.

As the tenure progresses, it will be key to monitor the execution of these plans and how well they are implemented.
