Explanation: KRIEC Disqualifies Four Candidates Ahead of Indy Hall Elections

By: IndyPress News Desk

The Katanga Republic Independent Electoral Commission (KRIEC) disqualified four aspirants from contesting executive positions in the upcoming election scheduled for February 27 2025.

The disqualified candidates are Oluwatuyi Nifemi, Ojo Precious, Onasanwo Tomiwa, and Olaoye David.

According to a special release, (KRIEC/2025/009) issued by the commission, the decision was based on the candidates’ performance during the press night held on February 24, 2025. The candidates scored below the established benchmark of 50, leading to their removal from the race.

New Evaluation Criteria Led to Disqualification

KRIEC clarified that it adjusted its assessment approach this year.

Unlike previous screenings where candidates’ manifestos and feasibility plans contributed significantly to the evaluation (about 40%), the commission prioritized candidates’ knowledge of their desired offices in the screening stage. The feasibility of their manifestos was instead evaluated during the press night.

The commission emphasized that all candidates were informed of this change on the day of the screening, and no objections were raised. Candidates also received feedback on their manifestos to help them improve their plans before the press night.

On the day of the press night, KRIEC reminded all aspirants of the evaluation criteria, stressing the need for thorough preparation. However, some candidates still performed poorly, with one candidate recycling a manifesto from the previous session, which negatively affected their score.

KRIEC Defends Its Decision Amid Allegations

Following the disqualification, some candidates alleged procedural misconduct on the part of KRIEC. However, the commission stated that none of the candidates have provided specific evidence of wrongdoing. KRIEC reiterated that its members are experienced and principled individuals committed to a fair and transparent election process.

The commission also dismissed concerns about the role of the press in the evaluation process, clarifying that the decision to disqualify the candidates was made solely by KRIEC.

It reassured the public that all journalists who participated in the press night are inducted members of the University Campus Journalists (UCJ).

Commitment to a Free and Fair Election

KRIEC maintains that its actions are in the best interest of the hall, emphasizing that candidates must demonstrate due diligence to be considered for leadership positions.

The commission noted that it remains dedicated to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election on Thursday, February 27.

The special release was signed by Omachonu Kelvin, Chairman; Ayinde Samuel, Secretary; and, Najimdeen Robiu Ayomide, Public Relations Officer.
