DOWNLOAD: UI Releases Updated Version of Student Handbook

By IndyPress News Desk

Months after several students demanded access to the University of Ibadan Student Handbook, an updated version has been published on the University’s website, IndyPress reports.

The virtual copy, comprising 216 pages, is the latest official edition, sanctioned for use beginning with the 2023/2024 academic session.

Notably, the updated version was made publicly available to the University community on April 17, 2025.

The handbook, which reflects updates to the names of the Visitor, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, the Chancellor, and other key officials, was published by the Student Affairs Division of the University of Ibadan.

In his foreword, the Dean of Students, Professor I.A. Abiona, remarked that “the Student Affairs Division oversees all aspects of student welfare in a bid to provide a conducive environment for learning and personal development.”

An IndyPress review of the document confirmed several modifications that the student community should take note of.

For instance, sanctions for violations of university regulations now stipulate fines “of N1000 or more for certain categories of offences committed” in the halls of residence. This update contrasts with the previous regulation, which capped such fines at N1000, as outlined in the statutory book of ethics governing hall residency.

The updated handbook also specifies that students intending to stage demonstrations “must of necessity write to notify the authorities in advance about their intention to stage a demonstration so that they can be given adequate protection from non-students and hoodlums.”

Furthermore, the handbook mandates that motor scooters, roller skates, motorbikes, and other motor vehicles must be reasonably used, properly licensed, and operated with protective gear.

“All staff and student-owned motorcars are required to be registered with the Intra-Campus Transport Committee,” it states.

Skating on major roads is strictly prohibited. Skaters are advised to restrict themselves to walkways and roads with low traffic flow and are required to wear protective gear at all times.

Traffic regulations under the Intra-Campus Transport Committee now include a fine of N5000 for offences such as jumping queues, refusal to queue, and picking up passengers at unauthorized locations on campus, among other violations.

Additionally, the handbook reaffirms that the time limit for visitors in the halls of residence is strictly 9:00 PM.

An updated list of awards and prizes is also included in the new edition.

According to the handbook, there are 150 registered clubs, associations, and societies available for student participation.

IndyPress reached out to the Students’ Union Executive Committee to confirm their awareness of the development and whether they were consulted during the handbook’s revision. The inquiry was partially successful.

The Public Relations Officer of the Union, Adekanmbi Ezekiel, confirmed that the Union leadership was aware of the updated handbook but indicated that he was pressed for time and could not comment further. He mentioned that he might return the press call at a later time.
