Some residents of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence, University of Ibadan, have been charged to pay a sum of ₦5,000 as a fine for reported ‘untidiness,’ IndyPress reports.

According to a broadcast co-signed by Awo Hall President, Goodluck Akinlawon, and Jennifer Fajolu, Information and Publicity Minister, the affected residents were warned that failure to pay the fine would lead to eviction.

“The following individuals have each been fined ₦5,000 (per person) for the following reasons: the untidiness at the back of their block, and their refusal to come downstairs for the compulsory cleaning this morning,” the broadcast reads.

“Affected individuals should kindly proceed to the Porters’ Lodge and do the needful or risk eviction,” it added.

A copy of the broadcast message obtained by IndyPress showed a long list of names and blocks affected.

The fine follows an earlier report by IndyPress, which spotlighted the modification in the Students Information Handbook which stated that fines for certain categories of offenses committed in the halls of residence now range from N1,000 and above. An update from the previous regulation that capped such fines at N1,000, and an issue which the current leadership of the Students’ Union has not reviewed or addressed in students’ best interest.

Efforts to get comments from the Awo Hall President, Goodluck Akinlawon, and the Hall Warden on the development were unsuccessful as of press time.
